ADAM, Robert

ADAM, Robert
(1728–1792)
The Scottish architect who was much influenced by his grand tours of Italy in 1755 to 1757 and 1760 to 1763 to produce an Italianate style that provided a reworking of the key themes of Western classical architecture. This style has in part, and confusingly, been christened the Etruscan style. In fact, this Etruscan style owed little to the Etruscans, in spite of the claims of Adam himself. His work was much more influenced by the wall paintings of Pompeii and Rome, Renaissance reworkings, and the Greek vases illustrated by Pierre Hugues d’Hancarville from the Hamilton collection.
